In this post I am digressing from my books and posting about another subject which is close to my heart - education and the current systems we have for educating our children.
I will state at the outset that I am not against education or education systems. I simply believe there is another way to educate our children which have much more far reaching effects for them, and the world as a whole.
I believe a new methodology is required. One which helps children identify what their passions are from as early an age as possible and then pursue their passion.
Such a system will make children much happier to go to school and learn about things they want to learn about. Right now, children are taught subject matter which they learn by rote and repeat in their tests. This same information is perhaps soon forgotten as children move on from that year to the next and learn other information about the same subject. Within a matter of years after leaving school, much of the information children learned and were tested on is forgotten as they no longer use the information. In hindsight, the time spent teaching and learning this information is simply wasted. Wasted by the teachers and the students.
If a much broader curriculum existed in which children could study information and subjects related to their passion and talents in life, they will learn faster, easier, and be happier. The potential of this is that they could complete their education much sooner and start contributing to the world at large and making a difference in the field of their passion.
Given, there are some fundamentals that need to be learned like addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, spelling, reading, social skills and more. But beyond that, why take geography if there will be no use for it in life later? I hear you say, but many teachers of certain subjects will be obsolete. Not so. There will still be a use for every subject but the students will be more focused on the subject matter and willing to learn when the subject matter is part of their passion. Teachers will be happier because they will be teaching children who want to learn what they are teaching. Grades will improve in leaps and bounds as interest will be increased and therefore retention of learning.
Much of the learning would be experiential. Internships would be a key focus at all levels in all industries to help children find the career they are passionate about.
Education costs will be reduced as the education lifespan will potentially be reduced but have so much more quality and depth. With focused education and learning the speed of innovation will increase as well.
So where to start? I cannot say but I would love to be involved in this change which is inevitable. Personally though, I do not believe that the answer lies in changing existing education systems but rather in establishing a whole new system. This will be a quicker way I believe.
Would we prefer to find a cure for cancer five years earlier or rather wait while the the person who finds the cure spends their time learning information they will never use again after school?
How many lives coud be saved in that time?
I would love to hear feedback on this post and suggestions.
Have a great day!
